26 Men # Ricochet

Song 26 Men written by Hal Hopper & Russ Hayden
The Song

Music: Gordon Zahler

altThe Larson brothers ride into town. Somehow in a rage because they are blamed for a fire they did not start and feeling guilty at the same time because a man has died by accident – he was killed by a bullet of theirs which had gone astray. They arrive in town the moment nearly all town residents have gone to church. Partly to have fun and partly to voice their anger they shoot at the church bell. This annoys the congregation. The captain approaches them and asks them to hang their guns on a board, which clearly states that this town is staying away from shootings. Reluctantly they do so.

altAaltll three brothers are aware that they are not allowed in town as long as the case concerning the fire and the shooting is not solved. They go for the saloon and confront the barkeeper. He was the one who first was eager to blame them for initiating the fire. As he seems to hide something, the Larsons become angry and Blake pulls the barkeeper’s head into some food on a tray before him on the counter. That moment the captain comes in and reminds them that they were to stay away from town. They knew and tell him that they’ve only come back to warn the people of an oncoming raid, planned by a group of gangsters they have met in the hills. But they leave afterwards.

As they cross the center of the little town, the oldest brother meets his girlfriend and tells her that he has saved up some money – altenough to begin a future together. She is reluctant because of the complicated situation. It was her father who haaltd been killed by the bullet. In the hills the oldest brother takes the money he has saved and goes back to town.  Blake tries to stop him, arguing that he will put himself into danger, but the brother does not listen. He knocks Blake down. The youngest brother cares for Blake who says: „What are you fussing about me? Stop him!“ but it is too late. As they see him disappear far away they notice two riders coming closer. They belong to the gang which makes the area unsafe. „Go and get your gun,“ Blake tells his brother, „They might not take ‚No‘ for an answer.“

altAs the two come close, they try to involve them in the planned raid on the town. Blake tells them that a certain day would be perfect because then all town will be on a Sunday School picnic. They are convinced. alt

altNow the two brothers ride to town to warn the people. The oldest brother has brought the money to Mrs. Millner, who is in mourning for her husband. She wants to have a statement confirmed that he, her daughter’s friend, was not the one who has fired the shots. But he tells her that whatever has happened, he is always riding with his brothers. In the meantime the captain shows the bullet to some people. He had it taken from the body and it clearly shows a deformation which indicates that it has hit another hard object before it killed the man. He is sure that the killing has been an accident.
Coming out of the house the eldest Larson brother is knocked down by the barkeeper who has arranged for a possee. The men try to hang him without trial for having caused the fire and for the death of Mr. Millner. In vain Jenny, his friend, tries to intervene. The two brothers come right in time to prevent the hanging of their brother.

By shooting they disperse the crowd. Seeing that the barkeeper aims his gun at their brother, Blake shoots him in his hand. Then they get their brother to safety and Blake hits the barkeeper with the hanging rope. Now the captain and the sheriff arrive and are astonished to find a possee.
altBlake tells him about the conversation he had with the gang leader and that are coming to raid the town. As the gang rides in, all is ready. In the bank, in the shop, everywhere the members of the gang are overwhelmed by men hiding in the buildings. Only in the bar the barkeeper does not leave the cash in the cash register as planned. He leaves it open to make it look like it was stolen and leaves through the back door. But the two men heading for the salon are right after him, finding him and the money behind the building. Trying to overwhelm him they fight. The eldest Larson brother sees the fight and saves the barkeeper. He has got the two men when the captain arrives. Now all town is grateful to the Larson brothers. Not only is the killing a proven accident, but also the barkeeper admits that it was him who has laid the fire.

Sea Hunt # Dead Man’s Cove

altMaria Tyler has drowned. Her worried husband, Robert Tyler, is sitting at the police station and shows the latest underwater photos he has taken of her. He blames himself for having been diving so deep with her. He says she’s promised not to go deeper, but she had. He could not follow her and now he is sad that she did not survive. alt
Something arouses the suspicion of the police officer. He asks his friend, Mike Nelson (Lloyed Bridges), in to help him.

altThey discover that a photo taken at the acclaimed depth would not show the colors this photo does. But they would not get a confession without a body.

altThe plan is that Mike goes diving with Robert Tyler at the same place his wife has died. He made him believe it would be possible to discover the body with the help of a newly developed kind of oxygen which makes it now possible to dive this deep. Under water the plan works. Tyler gets nervous and tries to flee taking the boat and trying to kill Mike by running him over with it. Mike dives and puts his scuba into the propellers of the boat. The boat is stopped, they fight and Tyler is giving up.

Highway Patrol # Blood Money

Dan Matthews: Broderick Crawford
Mike Richards: Gene Roth
Joe Mason:Wally Richard
Sandy:Theona Bryant
Ray: Leonard Nimoy

The Highway Patrol is forced to deal with a variation on the „Protection Racket,“ when men pay money week after week to keep their jobs or face consequences which can be deadly.
altMike Richards, a family man, is severely beaten by Sandy and his henchman Ray when he refuses to pay money each week in order to keep his job at the railroad/freight yard. He is found bloody and near death by the Highway Patrol. After Mike is transported to the hospital, Dan Matthews questions Mike’s wife who is obviously afraid to divulge any information regarding Mike’s former arrangement with Sandy and Ray for fear for her life.

Mike’s brother Joe Mason arrives and blames the incident on the Highway Patrol, stating that if they did their job this would not have happened to decent people like his brother. Meanwhile, back at Sandy’s place, the foreman of the freight yard is called and reminded not to talk to the police about the „accident“ that Mike Richards just  had. altRay calmly looks on, but reminds Sandy  that if Mike Richard’s dies, they will be in over their heads and in serious trouble.
Back at Mike Richard’s home, Joe tries to convince Mike’s wife to tell him what is going on and why anyone would want to hurt his brother. Despite his sister-in-laws pleading, Joe plans to take the law into his own hands.
Dan Matthews visits the railroad/freight yard and although he questions the foreman and one of Mike Richard’s fellow workers, is clueless still about the attack. This fellow worker then calls Mike’s wife and threatens to „finish the job“ on her husband if she talks to anyone about her husband’s debt to Sandy. Joe orders Mike’s wife to stay silent, but since no one at the railroad/freight yard knows him, he goes there to find the people who hurt his brother.

Joe Mason arrives at the Railroad/freight yard under the disguise of job hunting. He talks to one of his brother’s coworkers who says he knows who can help him. Joe is  sent to Sandy’s  house and tells him he is desperate for a job to help his ill mother. Sandy offers Joe some cash, which he initially declines. Ray orders him to take the money, saying  „..if Sandy says take, you take.“ Joe restates that he needs a real job but that there were no openings at the freight yard. Ray tells him to go back and tell the foreman that  he is a friend of Sandy’s  and  to take care of him. Sandy reminds Joe that this will cost him, while Ray emphasizes that their is nothing illegal about their deal and that Sandy is simply Joe’s agent. However, it will cost Joe ten-dollars a week to keep this job. Joe asks Sandy and Ray what will happen if he misses a payment. Sandy warns him that they know where he works and that they will find him. There is no place where Joe can hide from them. Not even by going to the cops.alt
After Joe leaves, Sandy orders Ray to follow him and find out what is truly going on. In the meantime, the Highway Patrol receives news that Mike Richards has died from his injuries.

Ray is next seen running through the freight yard to Sandy’s car. Ray has discovered that Joe Mason is a „plant, a phoney“ and that he is a relative of Mike Richards. Ray wonders is Joe is working for the cops. Sandy tells him to bring Joe back to his apartment.
At the freight yard, Joe desperately tries to reach Dan Matthews to inform him of Sandy’s illegal operation. Ray is waiting for him and pulls a knife out ordering him to „walk or bleed.“ altAt Sandy’s apartment, they beat Joe until he is unconscious and then load him into Sandy’s car.

Dan locates the worker who referred Mike and Joe to Sandy and inform him that he is about to be implicated in not one but possible two murders. This worker, Louie, tells Matthews the whole story.alt
altSandy and Ray arrive at the yard, planning to dump Joe’s body there. When they see Matthews they start running and eventually shooting.

Sandy is shot and killed in the ensuing gunfire.

Ray throws up his hands in defeat and surrenders to Dan and his officer. He informs them that Joe is  in Sandy’s auto. The story ends with Dan Matthews informing Joe that he is lucky to be alive.
